When considering the nutritional facts you should take into account that 1 gr. of fat is equal to calories, 1 gr. of protein is equal to 4 calories, 1 gr. of carb`s is equal to 4 calories and 1 gr. of alcohol is equal to 7 calories. This is very important if you want to be able to choose the right foods to lose weight effectively.
Claims on food labels Sometimes terms that are used on foods can be very confusing, for example what exactly does fat free mean? What does sugar free mean? Here are those terms explained in detail.
If you are looking for a product to be fat free then it has to have less than 0.5 grams of fat in it.
Low fat is 3 grams or less per serving of the product.
Saturated free means that the product contains less than 0.5 grams of saturated fat
Cholesterol free means that the product must contain less than 2mg of cholesterol for every serving
Low cholesterol means that there should be 20mg or less of cholesterol per serving

Why Can't I Lose Weight?
There seems to be no end to the lengths Americans will go to, to lose weight. From fasting to gorging, everyone seems to have the latest cure and the latest fad diet. There is no wonder people are searching online, asking "Why can't I lose weight"?
How crazy can diets get? How about getting injections of a pregnant woman's urine? Or eating nothing but cabbage soup? Has the world gone mad or are they just having a laugh at our expense.
If we are to take the question "Why can't I lose weight?" seriously then we need to look at how that person has tried to lose weight in the past. If they have tried fad diet after fad diet and wanted to lose weight quickly then maybe that would be the first place to start.
I recently had someone ask me that very question. "Why can't I lose weight"? When we looked at her diet it was low in calories and low in protein. But what the person asking the question couldn't understand was, she had been eating almost half the amount of food she normally ate and she still wasn't losing weight.
There is so much misleading information around on weight loss that it is no wonder there is total confusion. The sooner people realise that they will not lose weight permanently on a fad diet that either concentrates on one food, promises amazing weight loss in 7 days or suggests that you need to cut calories to lose weight, the sooner people will stop asking "Why can't I lose weight"?
It seems to me that the majority of people who have a chronic weight problem have been doing something wrong. They have either been eating the wrong foods or simply eating too much and probably too late in the day. Anyone who thinks that they can lose weight by embarking on a fad diet that is far from being a well balanced nutritious regime is just fooling themselves.
It is vital that all the people who are saying "why can't I lose weight?" realise, first and foremost, that a healthy well balanced nutritious diet is the only way forward, not just for their immediate weight lose regime, but for life.
Rapid weight loss is detrimental to your health and is unlikely ever to be sustained. Consuming low levels of calories as suggested by some diet regimes is basically a semi starvation diet and can cause loss of muscle from our organs including our heart. This is not a sensible way forward.
Always look for the scientific evidence to back up any diet you may choose to follow. And remember it is physiologically impossible to lose more than 2lb of fat a week. Any diet promising more than that is lying. You may however lose more weight than 2lb but it won't be fat. It will either be water or muscle and most importantly your body will not be able to sustain that weight loss when you return to normal eating.
So to answer the question "why can't I lose weight?" it is likely to be because you are not eating enough of the right foods at the right time of day. It really is as simple as that.

The most effective method for weight loss is reducing the number of calories you consume while increasing the number of calories you burn through physical activity. That sounds easy enough, huh? If you are anything like me, cutting back on calories is hard enough without having to combine it with increased activity. I have spent many years trying to work out this formula to lose weight naturally without it throwing me into deep depression. It can be done if you do it in "baby steps" and plan to succeed.
For example, if you consume 500 extra calories per day for one week without changing your activity level, you will gain 1 pound in weight (seven days multiplied by 500 calories equals 3,500 calories, or the number of calories resulting in a 1-pound weight gain). Likewise, if you eat 500 fewer calories each day for a week or burn 500 calories per day through exercise for one week, you will lose 1 pound.
Examples of calorie content of some popular foods and beverages include:
one slice original-style crust pepperoni pizza - 230 calories
one glass dry white wine - 160 calories
one can cola - 150 calories
one quarter-pound hamburger with cheese - 500 calories
one jumbo banana nut muffin - 580 calories
Any activities you do throughout the day are added to your BMR (basal metabolic rate) to determine the total number of calories you burn each day. More recent advancements in body typing such as the Heath-Carter method, take into account internal (metabolic) characteristics as well and has an impact for those wanting to lose weight
From a metabolic perspective, the endomorph body type sometimes has varying degrees of carbohydrate sensitivity and insulin resistance. If someone is metabolically carbohydrate intolerant due to a genetic tendency, then high carbohydrate diets are not the preferred choice if they want to lose weight as they will stimulate excess secretion of insulin and glucose will be partitioned into the fat cells more easily.
The carb intolerant endomorph needs to heed very specific nutritional advice. They would be well advised to significantly reduce the amount of processed and refined carbs from their diet, particularly white sugar and white flour products. These concentrated carbs will convert to body fat more rapidly in endomorphs. For some endomorphs a further reduction in carbs may be necessary to help them to lose weight and in extreme cases a small handful of them may find they are more successful with a traditional ketogenic diet which is even lower in carbs and higher in fat.
An Individualized Approach to Nutrition is the Key!
The variation in body types must dictate the macronutrient split. This is one of the reasons why eating according to your body type is vital if you are to lose weight, maintain your weight or even gain weight. There is no one diet to suit all and so there should be a diet designed to suit the goals and body type of each individual.
In most cases diets designed to help you to lose weight follow the 90-10 rule, which means follow your diet strictly 90% of the time and then 10% of the time, eat whatever you want. 3. The Ectomorphs - the lean, skinny types. They are usually very thin and bony, with fast metabolisms and extremely low body fat.
From the above information you can see that the endomorph body type is someone who is genetically prone to store fat easily due to a slow metabolism. Endomorph body types are usually, but not always, large-framed with medium to large joints. If you're an endomorph and you mess up on your diet, the surplus calories are almost certain to go to fat. Even when you're in a caloric deficit, it seems like the fat goes down at a painfully slow rate. Your ability to lose weight will be impaired if you do not know what to eat to encourage weight loss
If you think you are an endomorph don't lose heart, there are countless examples of endomorphs who were once overweight or obese and who went on to lose weight and become super lean. What they did was to simply understand their body type and adjust their nutrition and training accordingly. They understood that they couldn't copy someone else's diet and lose weight unless that other person had the same type of body.

One of the most popular ways to lose weight is to choose foods according to their Glycemic Load (GL). All food has a glycemic index (GI) which is a qualitative measure that tells you whether the carbohydrate it contains is fast or slow releasing. The Glycemic Load tells you more about the effect that food will have on your weight, ie whether or not it will cause you to put on weight.
If we are to believe that the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off is to by stabalising your blood sugar and insulin response to food, then we need to pay attention to the ways to achieve this. Keeping the blood sugar balanced depends not only on what we eat but also when we eat it.
Firstly we need to reduce the amount of carbohydrate in our diets. We also need choose foods/carbohydrates with a low glycemic-load (GL), combine carbohydrates with protein and cut back on stimulants and stress.
To lose weight on this diet it is important to make sure that you eat no more than 40 GL a day and at main meals you should eat low GL carbohydrates with protein rich foods.
How a food is processed, prepared or cooked is a key element in the GL of a food and therefore the effect it will have on your blood sugar. If you eat spaghetti if example your blood sugar levels and your insulin levels will rise quite gently until the body produces insulin and then they drop. However if you eat white bread they will rise twice as high and then drops down much lower. It is the peaks that damage your arteries making them less responsive to insulin and the troughs that leave you tired and sleepy and craving carbohydrates and or stimulants. It is strange that two foods made of roughly the same flour can have such different effects on the body. This is probably due to the fact that bread is cooked for longer than spaghetti. Needless to say eating white bread will do nothing to help you to lose weight
The Glycemic Index the levels to which different foods raise your blood sugar compared with the effect of pure glucose. The more complex the carbohydrate, the lower the GI, as it will take longer for the sugar to be broken down and released into the blood stream . For example apples and oats are slow releasing and raisins and puffed rice cereal are fast releasing. So the foods you choose to help you to lose weight should be from the Low Glycemic Index foods
However there is one small problem with using just the GI score as you will find that certain foods such as carrots and chocolate have similar scores and clearly it would be foolish to choose the chocolate over the carrots if you want to avoid the blood sugar highs and lows and ultimately lose weight. The Glycemic Load (GL) is a far better way of predicting the right foods to eat as it is an indicator of what a given serving of food will do to your blood sugar. Remember that balancing your blood sugar and insulin is the only sure way to lose weight and keep it off.

There is a lot of controversy about the correct way to lose weight. Everybody would have you believe that their way is the best way. If you are serious about losing weight the sensible way so that you sustain your weight loss for years to come then it is worth dispelling some of the myths that surround the weight loss industry and the fitness industry.
If you see a diet saying you will lose weight in 7 days, the truth of the matter is, yes you may well lose weight in 7 days , but only 2lb of any weight lost will be fat. Any other weight lost during the 7 days will be either water, muscle or both.
You will come across many thoughts and ideas about how to lose weight and some of them are distinctly unhealthy and will not only cause health problems but may also cause you to gain weight
Here are some examples
1. A fad diet such as the Hollywood Cookie diet, juice fasting or the Grapefruit diet and follow it for a week. At best you will lose 5/6 lbs that will go straight back on the minute you return to normal eating, at worst you will feel really ill, possibly very light headed and/or headaches as your body tries to adjust to this unhealthy regime. Don't try to lose weight this way
2. A daily visit to the gym doing bench presses or dead lifting double your body weight followed by 100 abdominal crunches. We now know that abdominal crunches are not the way to creating a six pack and great care needs to be taken when under taking a fitness regime to ensure you are not doing your body more harm than good.
3. Eat no more than three times a day and do not eat after 6 p.m. Do not eat real food, focus on protein bars and pre-packaged foods. Eating smaller meals more often is now thought to be the way forward and protein bars are foremergencies only. Nothing can replace "real" food as this is what the body recognises.
4. Dramatically reduce your calorie intake. Low calorie diets are now thought to be dangerous and cause the body to go into adrenal stress. This will not help you to lose weight and may even cause you to gain weight.
5. Do not eat breakfast. Have two cups of coffee and a low-fat muffin. High carbohydrate breakfast and stimulant drinks such as coffee will play havoc with your metabolism and give you a very bad start to the day whether you are on a weight loss diet or not. Also your low fat muffin may well contain hydrogenated fat which is very bad for your health.
6. Take diet pills. This is an absolute "no, no" Avoid at all costs.
Weight loss is in fact an intricate science. It follows the science of how the body works. If you do not follow this correctly you will not maintain your weight loss in the future

The food industry have been guilty of producing many new an exciting tastes to tickle our taste buds, to the extent that real food can easily appear bland and uninteresting. The general public are equally guilty of being taken in by these new foods and have been reluctant to see them as nothing more than sheer temptation.
Obesity is one of the fastest developing health concerns particularly as it can lead to type 11 diabetes and heart disease. The need to lose weight is no longer just about the way we look but more importantly to do with the potential for serious health problems. This is particularly true of those who have been overweight since childhood and so understandably our governments are showing real concern for the health and well being of our overweight and obese young people. Of course the skeptics would say they are viewing them as a potential future expense for the health service and sadly they may well be right.
So what can we do to help our young people to lose weight? Although is a difficult question, the main responsibility for the fact that many young people are over weight has to be with their parents. Dietary habits and food preferences start at a very early age at a time when only the parents have control on what their children eat. Unfortunateley many parents have bad dietary habits themselves and so these habits are passed on to their children. The next responsibility is with the playgroups and nurseries that young children attend. My experience of the food served at nurseries is that it is high in carbohydrates and very low in protein, probably to make it more cost effective, but for some children this can be the start of a carbohydrate rich diet that can cause weight problems in the future. I have also been aware of playgroups and nurseries giving children snacks of biscuits and cake and occasionally rewards of sweets and chocolates, particularly if it is a child's birthday. Although many young children will cope with these foods without gaining weight their will be other children who will develop a liking for sweet foods and will subsequently develop weight related problems. None of these seemingly harmless habits are helping our young people to lose weight as we are simply encouraging dietary habits that will be difficult to break in the future.
There is a widespread misconception amongst many parents and other adults that children need or deserve sweets or sweet treats. Children will only desire these things once they have been given a taste for them. They don't need sugar in their diets and would be far healthier and better off without them. I have observed children in school eating nothing but cakes and biscuits and sugar laden yoghurts for their lunch, followed by something sweet and fizzy to drink. Whatever happened to the healthy savoury sandwich??? Children who subsequently need to lose weight will not have the benefit of a healthy dietary habits to fall back on and so they will find it very difficult to lose weight. These are also the children who later in life will have a higher chance of falling prey to conditions such as hypoglycemia and diabetes
All children should be encouraged to have a well balanced healthy diet with the correct balance of protein, fat and carbohydrate. A healthy diet will more than compensate for the occasional sweet treat and through their healthy approach to food and diet they are less likely to be amongst those who need to lose weight in the future.
There have been many excellent programs on the television showing how families completely eradicate the unhealthy foods from their diets. They were encouraged to clear their cupboards of all the unhealthy food and start with a clean slate. They then restocked with healthy foods and started to learn the art of home cooking. The children naturally created a fuss to begin with but eventually they were able to appreciate that these healthy foods were not only going to help them avoid the need to lose weight but also help to improve their behavior, their performance at school and their general overall health both in the present and in the future. It didn't take long for their diets to be transformed. But the parents had to be prepared to persevere. If you give into your child they will know that they can win the battle and your job will become even harder.

However even more important is the fact the fat accumulation will eventually extend to other areas of the body and you will be come progressively more obese. There is a belief amongst those who are overweight that they can be overweight and be healthy. This just isn't the case. The number of people whose desire to lose weight is a top priority is increasing daily. We hear regularly on the news that there are more and more young children with weight problems and the number of clinically obese adults is almost becoming an epidemic.
The number of programs to help you to Lose Weight has risen dramatically to meet this ever increasing need and they all have their various promises of "amazing weight loss" in record time.
The latest fad weight loss diets make trying to lose weight sound like a fun holiday, but as we know only too well weight loss is far from fun for most people, in fact it can become an obsession or a complete turn off. The information available has become an absolute minefield and many people are struggling to know which program they should choose. Unfortunately if you give people too many choices they often end up doing nothing.
So why has the need to lose weight become such an epidemic? As with all things there is never a simple answer. It would appear that 2 people can eat similar foods and one will be overweight and the other will be as "thin as stick". Although this can be very frustrating, often for both parties concerned, it is not easy to ascertain why this should be.
At the end of the day it is up to each individual to understand their own bodies and know what foods they can eat and what foods either have a bad effect on them or cause them to put on weight. Knowing how to lose weight is an individual business. In the same way that two people can eat the same food and one puts on weight and the other doesn't two overweight people can go on the same weight loss diet and one will lose weight and the other may at best stay the same or at worst may even put weight on. So why should this be?

Of course as I said early this is not a simple matter and of course the reasons for these metabolic differences are much more complicated. However even at the basic level it does help to know that there are very definitive reasons why one person finds it relatively easy to lose weight while another person finds it extremely difficult to shift those stubborn pounds/kilograms.
So why are so many people being diagnosed as clinically obese. Basically most people have a poor diet lacking in good nutritional principles. The reason why people put weight on in the first place can often be different from the reason why they find it so difficult to lose weight. But if they were eating a well balanced nutritious diet in the first place it is very unlikely that weight loss would now be an issue for them. By that I mean eating food as nature intended, so no weird and wonderful chicken nuggets that look like they never saw chicken, or low fat spreads that are so highly processed their molecular structure isn't even recognized by our digestive systems. Did you know that margarine is just one molecule different from plastic??
If you want to be slim and healthy then feed your body "real food". A good rule of thumb is - if your ancestors didn't eat it then you shouldn't eat it either.
Many of the products intended to help you to lose weight use additives that mimic real food and our bodies don't know how to respond. Diet drinks for instance are now being sited as one of the main reasons why people are unable to lose weight, mainly due to the sugar substitutes that are used, which incidentally are also being linked to various health complaints.
How many of us would treat our cars with as little respect as we treat our bodies?
If we treated our bodies with the same care and attention we give to our cars then the need to lose weight would be a thing of the past. Most of us would ensure that our cars had regular overhauls, yearly MOT's, regular oil change and we would use good quality petrol appropriate to the car we are driving. It is obvious common sense - but not so obvious it would appear when it comes to looking after our bodies!!

There are many approaches to weight loss ranging from joining a slimming club to following the latest diet fad from a book or even online. Many people are put off by these methods and want to keep it as simple as possible. There are some generic weight loss tips that anyone can follow that will not only help you to lose weight but will also raise your overall level of health.
Here are some simple rules that can help you to lose weight.
1. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day as it is the first fuel your body receives to ensure it is working on optimum energy. A breakfast that contains a reasonable amount of good quality protein will ensure that your body is utilizing the protein to turn fat into lean muscle. That of course is very important for anyone who wants to lose weight
2. Have some protein at every meal for the reasons stated above. Protein also helps to speed up the metabolic rate, ensures that you feel full after your meal and also ensures that you are unlikely to feel hungry before your next meal.
3. Tea and coffee and alcohol are stimulants and can play havoc with your metabolism. Avoid wherever possible.
4. Eat regularly. Five smaller meals is actually better than three larger meals, as every time you eat you are stimulating your metabolism to help you lose weight. But remember to eat some protein each time rather than carbohydrate heavy snacks
5. Drink plenty of water. Lack of water can cause the body to hold on to water as it is afraid that there won't be enough. This can cause water retention. Also hunger is often one of the body's cries for water and a glass of water may just satisfy those hunger pangs
6. Exercise regularly. Twenty minutes exercise that raises the heart rate is ideal. Any exercise you do after that however small will burn more calories. If you don't like structured exercise find ways of increasing your activity. Run upstairs instead of walking. Walk briskly to the shop instead of taking the car. Stretch your muscles, by literally stretching your arms and legs and turning/twisting your upper body. It is advisable to seek the help of an expert re exercise as it is very easy to do unnecessary damage if you don't know what you are doing
7. If you do like exercise weight training can be beneficial as muscle helps to burn fat - an essential component of you need to lose weight. Again the help of a trainer would be beneficial to ensure you are doing the right exercises for you
8. Sort out any food intolerances you may have as they can prevent you from being able to lose weight. Food intolerances can cause all sorts of health problems including the inability to lose weight
9. Begin to think of yourself as becoming the person you want to be. Think of yourself as slim rather than thinking of yourself as overweight as this will encourage you to eat like a slim person
10. Throw away your scales. If you lose weight according to your scales you may just have lost muscle or water. This is not an indication you have burned any fat. The best way is to take your measurements once a week. That way you will soon see the results of turning fat into lean muscle and consequently a leaner slimmer you.
There are so many myths that surround the weight loss industry that it isn't surprising that so many people fail to lose weight. So many diets are fad diets and encourage quick weight loss at the expense of lasting weight loss. Those who do manage to lose weight often fail to maintain that weight and very soon return to their previous weight and heavier. Keep it simple and use your common sense. If it makes sense then likely it will work. If it sounds to good to be true then it probably is and you are unlikely to lose weight healthily and permanently.

Losing weight is a complex issue. Many people who are overweight really don't understand how they got to be that weight. Many of them will tell you they have healthy diets and don't over eat. Some will even tell you they eat very little. Unfortunately we have habit of lying to ourselves when we don't want to face the truth. It is easier to pretend that we eat sensibly if we don't want to have to change our eating habits. But the bottom line is if we delude ourselves we will never lose weight. The start of a successful weight loss regime must be an honest acceptance that we have some bad dietary habits that have lead us to this point. Then and only then can we hope to lose weight successfully
Having run a slimming club for many years I have seen many hundreds of people who are desperate to lose weight. When a new person joins a slimming club it is normal to ask them a few questions about their dietary habits so that you can start to build a picture of why they are overweight and how you can help them to successfully lose weight.
Many people simply see themselves as fat and unattractive and so consequently if they see themselves as fat they will eat as if they are fat diminishing their chances to lose weight considerably. One of the first things they need to do to overcome this is to think of themselves as thin and then they will be more inclined to eat as a thin person thus increasing their ability to lose weight.
Of course there is far more to it than that, but all these aspects need to be taken into consideration if the ability to lose weight is to be optimized. It is a form of mind over matter and also fits in with the ideas put forward by the law of attraction - you are what you think you are. If you think you are slim then you will attract slimness. If you want to lose weight successfully it is no use eating all the right foods and doing all the exercises if deep down you see yourself as fat and unattractive as you will soon give up, your ability to lose weight will be diminished and you will become once again the fat person you think you are.
